When I welcomed Joel home from the Bahamas sailing trip that he took with some seniors, he was limping. He kinda shrugged it off and said that he just hurt his foot on the boat somehow. By Monday, he could barely walk on it at all. We made the self-diagnosis that it was a plantar's wart, but he was encouraged by a doctor friend of ours to get it checked out by a podiatrist. On Wednesday, the podiatrist looked at it and immediately knew that it was an infection. He dug around in it quite a bit, but didn't find much and left Joel in excruciating pain. By Thursday night, his foot was swollen up like a watermelon, it was pulsating in pain, and he couldn't sleep. He got some pain meds, crutches, and an appointment with a different doctor who dug around a little more and changed up his antibiotics. The doctor said that he was so badly infected that he considered putting him in the hospital to put him under to dig around deeper. Meanwhile, they are stumped as to how this all started. Obviously, it was something from the sailing trip, but Joel doesn't remember anything happening to his foot. The doctor joked with him saying that if he hadn't been on a ministry trip, he would have thought that he had been drinking too much to remember. Joel's best guess is that something got in his foot when they were taking a picture on this sunken airplane. He had a follow-up appointment this morning. The swelling has gone down considerably, but the doctor was still unsatisfied with how it was looking. They took a culture and it turns out that he has a really bad staph infection that is highly resistant to antibiotics. They put him on a different antibiotic, which we hope will do the trick and get us to the beach next week with my family. The doctor will see him again on Friday, and will hopefully have good news for Joel. I must say that I am OVER being a single mom. So, family, I need you next week while we're at the beach.

Poor Joel and poor Katherine! Praying for you both. Not an easy summer for you guys I must say - a summer in the fire. I know the gold that is being produced within you as a result of this fire is pricelss. We are praying that it lets up though and that you can get some good rest and enjoy one another before the school year picks up for you guys!
Poor big brother! I hope your foot returns to normal very soon and that you get some much needed rest and family time. Love you!
Oh man! That is NOT the kind of news i was hoping to hear from y'all. i do hope and pray that it only gets better from here. While he's healing, fix meals with lots of garlic! It's a natural antibiotic!
